The joy of running is that you can just put your shoes on and head out the door. But in reality, if you hope to increase your distance and have a long running life, then it is essential to condition your muscles.
This not only makes you a better, faster, stronger runner but more importantly, one that is less likely to get injured. Whatever you are training for, 5k, half marathon or even an ultra, conditioning is all.
For the beginners this will help to consolidate the foundations in running that we have already begun to build last week. For our experienced runners, this is about helping your to maximise your performance.
In addition to conditioning work, we will be looking at essential stretches and the all important foam roller. This latter should be an essential piece of kit in any runner’s arsenal – as important as a p air of shoes.
They are inexpensive, costing around £15 on amazon.co.uk or you can get them from Nick Rivett Sport on Church Road, or SweatShop. All will give discounts if you show your running club wrist band.
The one illustrated above is a roller known as The Grid, which is much more expensive. You DON’T NEED one like this at this stage.
It would be advisable to have one with you on Wednesday, so you can experience how they work. and just why they are so important.
